Abolitionist History In London's Abney Park Cemetery
2020年06月22日 クレジット:Dan Kitwood
LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 22: The grave of poet and author Josiah Conder, lies in Abney Park Cemetery, on June 22, 2020 in London, England. Josiah Conder, who died in 1877, became a founding committee member of the 'British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society'. Mr Conder was also an organiser of the world's first Anti-Slavery Convention, which was held in London in 1840. A painting of the convention, by Benjamin Haydon, hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Abney Park Cemetery is a non-denominational cemetery in Stoke Newington, North London, and is home to several key figures, who were instrumental in, or with links to, the abolition of slavery. Many missionaries who were active during the abolitionist movement to end the slave trade are buried at Abney Park Cemetery. Following the death of African American George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020, 'Black Lives Matter' movements have triggered the removal of statues with links to racism and the slave trade in the UK and overseas, and asked people to question who should be celebrated instead.
